The True Story Behind Rustom

Before we get into the details of the movie, let's first understand the true story that inspired it. Rustom is loosely based on the infamous Nanavati case that took place in Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1959. This was a case that involved a naval officer named Kawas Manekshaw Nanavati, who shot dead his wife's lover, Prem Ahuja, in his bedroom.

Nanavati was a Parsi commander in the Indian Navy who was married to Sylvia, an English woman. They had three children and lived a happy life until Nanavati was assigned to a long overseas mission. During his absence, Sylvia fell in love with Ahuja, a wealthy and flamboyant businessman who was a friend of the couple.

When Nanavati returned from his duty, he sensed something was wrong with his wife and confronted her. Sylvia confessed to having an affair with Ahuja and told Nanavati that Ahuja had promised to marry her. Nanavati then decided to confront Ahuja and asked his wife and children to wait for him at a cinema hall. He took his service revolver and went to Ahuja's flat. There, he found Ahuja in his bedroom and asked him if he would marry Sylvia. When Ahuja refused, Nanavati shot him three times and killed him.

Nanavati then surrendered himself to the police and admitted his crime. He was arrested and charged with murder. However, his case soon became a sensation in the media and the public. Nanavati was seen as a hero who defended his honor and his wife's dignity, while Ahuja was portrayed as a villain who seduced a married woman and betrayed his friend. Many people, especially from the Parsi community and the navy, rallied behind Nanavati and demanded his acquittal. On the other hand, some people, especially from the Sindhi community and the business class, supported Ahuja's family and demanded justice for him.

The trial of Nanavati was one of the most controversial and dramatic trials in Indian history. It involved several twists and turns, such as the involvement of the governor, the chief minister, the prime minister, the president, and even the jury system. It also sparked a debate on morality, law, justice, and society. The case was eventually closed in 1962, when Nanavati was pardoned by the president and left India with his wife and children.
